Kennington Chartists Schools Project

KS2 children from four Oval Learning Cluster schools will spend the day working with a series of workshop leaders to explore the history of Chartism In Kennington Park.
Workshop 1 : Kennington 1848
A lively, interactive session delving into the archives to explore the 1848 Chartist Rally on Kennington Common. The students will participate in the writing of their own new collective charter led by local historian Steve Martin and professional story teller, Sandra Agard.
Workshop 2 : Oratory and Anthems
Exploring the themes of public speaking and song writing, working with musician Luke Crooks. Using the ideas generated by the children we will create chants, rally cries and a short song. The song will form the core of the parade anthem.
Workshop 3 : Banners and Costume
This final workshop will look at the importance of banners in the Chartist Rallies. The children will be invited to reimagine them in a contemporary context and make their own banners which will be carried in the parade on July 7th in Kennington Park
July 7th Public Parade in Kennington Park
The children will be invited(along with their friends and families) to take part in the community parade performing their new anthem and carrying their banners in Kennington Park as part of the celebration of the 170th anniversary of the Chartist Rally.
